SURROUND SOUND

Glarus Ambient Electronic is a festival concept that takes advantage of the sonic and spatial qualities of Volksgarten Park in the Alpine town of Glarus, Switzerland.

Surrounding around its central fountain, the park hosts up to three musical artists at a time, performing simultaneously with directional speakers. Visitors are invited to explore the performances dynamically: moving around the periphery of the park, different sonic zones allow for intimate performances from world-renowned artists, whereas standing close to the center, a cacophony of music combined with the organic sounds of the fountain can be heard all at once.

LEARNING, SKETCHING, ITERATING

Following a week of intensive study of type theory, composition, and letterpress printing, I produced over 50 typographic sketches to study a wide range of possible designs for my poster.

Through a methodical use of constraints (breaking up word syllables; one type size; no rotation; warping characters; etc.), I arrived at a dynamic and subtly representational direction for the poster.

HEAVY METAL

Set entirely in 72pt Helvetica lead type, this poster run was printed in three passes on pulp-dyed Fedrigoni Tintoretto paper in the shade Ceylon Cumino. Repeated/mirrored event information sits in silver ink, with artist names in undulating blue-grey tones.

The design can stand alone, or two 180º flipped copies can be displayed side-by-side to form the shape of the Volksgarten fountain.

This poster was completed as a result of the 120-hour Typographic Printing Program hosted by Dafi Kühne in Näfels, Switzerland.
